Greeting

I was born in central Kyoto, a beautiful and historic town. I was lucky to grow up amidst its vibrant culture.
After graduating from school, I entered the world of traditional woodworking and obtained a Technical Carpenter and Architect’s License, Class 1.
I specialized in shrine and temple construction and worked on repairing the traditional wooden buildings in Kyoto, where I was born and raised.
Seeking to improve my skills, I traveled to Europe and underwent training there in the repair of traditional handcrafts.
Through those firsthand experiences, I came to deeply appreciate the traditional carpentry tools and handicraft equipment that Japan produces.

The defining features of Japanese tools are their functionality, robustness, and value. They are something to be felt and experienced, not measured. These tools are reliable, high quality, and will delight the user.

One reason these tools came into being was Japan’s background as an impoverished country. People had to be resourceful and use limited resources to create high quality and resilient tools, and only these were the ones that stood the test time. Take saws, for instance. The material must be thin, lightweight, have a clean cutting edge, and yet be durable at the same time.

Another aspect of made in Japan products is how they have been continually refined and improved upon. Japan has since ancient times been besieged by natural disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and flooding. Even when all is lost, Japan has rebuilt – its buildings, its towns, and its spirit.
To rebuild is to evolve.
Each time things have been rebuilt, they have been reborn in a newer and better form.
